God Is Debt

Content Warning

Although the game attempts to be a goofy, satirical take on various aspects of capitalism, it blatantly references distressing subjects through various enemies, bosses, and their attack patterns.

The level 'Straight of Devastation' is solely based on imperialism, conquest, and genocide. It references several war crimes which are currently being carried out with no signs of cessation or genuine sanction.

The level 'Flats of Ire' has a couple of references to media racism and the persistent scapegoating of foreign migrants.

Summary

God is Debt is a satirical Shoot 'em up that takes place in a world where our worship of capitalism resulted in the birth of a new pantheon. Each deity embodies a different aspect of capitalism. 

Intro

For untold millennia we beckoned to its call.
Unbridled sacrifice as it bore us rot.

Ushered by our complacent hands.
Empowered by our vacant minds.

A fitting pantheon for our tarnished hearts.
Humanity’s most perfect reward.

Hope still remains amongst dormant apostates.
They prepare their final gambit...

Development

The game was made for the Fuck Capitalism Jam 2025 by myself. I have spent 190 hours on this project, spread over 20 days.

The game was developed in GameMaker Studio 2. Other software used was Aseprite for the visuals, Waveform 11 for the music, and Chiptone for the sound effects.

Depending on my thoughts after the jam, I may expand upon the game, extending it to have at least 5 complete levels, as well as a few other features that would have taken too long for this jam.
